I had been with the same carrier for 9 years. Took two minutes to fill out, an agent called me back the same afternoon, and I cut my premium almost in half. Wish I’d done this sooner.
Bundled my auto and home and saved over a thousand bucks. The agent was straight with me about what each policy actually covered — none of that “fine-print” nonsense.
I expected the usual robocall flood. Got one call, from a real licensed agent in my state, who walked me through three options and let me pick. Refreshing.

Across all 50 states and D.C., full coverage averages about $173/month and a state-minimum policy about $57/month. The spread between states is wide — from ~$100/mo in Maine to ~$320/mo in Louisiana — so where you live moves the needle as much as what you drive.
Ranked by state-average full-coverage premium, the three cheapest states are:
And the three most expensive:

Our estimates start from the base rates each state Department of Insurance publishes, apply vehicle modifiers, and show a ±25% band around the midpoint. What they can’t model are driver-level factors — your age, driving record, credit history, and exact ZIP — and those routinely move a real quote more than the state average does. Treat the averages as a benchmark, not a promise.
In rough order of impact: your ZIP code, driving record, age, credit history (California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Michigan restrict credit-based pricing), the vehicle you insure, and the coverage level you choose. The first two are usually worth more than everything else combined.
Comparing is free — always. When carriers price a quote they use a soft credit pull, which never affects your credit score. Nothing dings your credit until you actually finance a policy.
Carriers and licensed agencies pay us when you choose to connect with them. You never pay us anything, and the rate you’re quoted is the same either way.

Every state sets its own floor, and they differ a lot: California requires 15/30/5 liability, Florida is a no-fault state requiring $10,000 in PIP, and Maine requires 50/100/25 — one of the highest minimums in the country. See your state page for the exact rules where you live.
Accident surcharges typically last 3–5 years, but carriers weight incidents very differently — so re-shopping is the single fastest fix. A state-approved defensive-driving course can offset part of the surcharge too. Full playbook: how to lower your car insurance after an accident.
