What an extended auto warranty actually is
Technically, most “extended warranties” sold after the factory warranty expires are vehicle service contracts — not warranties from the manufacturer. They’re mechanical-breakdown protection plans offered by third-party administrators with various coverage tiers.
The three coverage tiers
- Powertrain — engine, transmission, drive axles. Cheapest tier; covers most expensive repairs.
- Stated component — specific list of covered parts; everything not listed excluded.
- Exclusionary (bumper-to-bumper) — everything covered except a specific exclusion list. Most expensive; closest to original factory warranty.
- Best window to buy: 50K–70K miles, before factory warranty expires (premiums lowest then).
- Make sure the administrator has a strong claim-payment track record (Better Business Bureau, BBB).
- Avoid robocalls offering "extended warranty" — those are almost always scams.

- Roadside + rental often bundled.
- Most owners pay more in premium than they collect.
- Many "warranty" sellers are scammy.
- Coverage exclusions extensive — read fine print.
- Self-insurance via emergency fund often better for reliable vehicles.
